Queen Elizabeth II has died, Buckingham Palace confirmed

Queen Elizabeth II, after 70 years as reigning monarch of the United Kingdoms has passed away at Balmoral, her Scottish residence, surrounded by her family. 

Just two days after carrying out her duties by appointing Liz Truss as the new Prime Minister of Britain, Queen Elizabeth passed away at her Balmoral, in Scotland, surrounded by her family. 

Before an official announcement was made just after 6 pm on Thursday, Sept 8, Queen Elizabeth's children traveled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision. Prince William was also there and Prince Harry was on his way.

Upon the Queen's death, Prince Charles now ascended to the King of England.

Britain's new Prime Minister Liz Truss led the nation's tributes to the Queen. She said Queen Elizabeth "provided us with the stability and strength that we needed."

Shed added that the nation would now support the new King.

"We offer him our loyalty and devotion, just as his mother devoted so much, to so many, for so long.

"And with the passing of the second Elizabethan age, we usher in a new era in the magnificent history of our great country, exactly as Her Majesty would have wished, by saying the words 'God save the King'."

His Majesty the King, formerly Prince Charles, who now becomes head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms, said in a statement:

"The death of my beloved mother Her Majesty the Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

"We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world."

He added that he and his family would now be "comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held".

Upon the death of Queen Elizabeth, Buckingham Palace released a statement that read: 

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

"The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Just two days ago (Sept 6) Queen Elizabeth II appointed Liz Truss as the new Prime Minister of Britain. To put her life's work as Queen into perspective Truss was the 15th Prime Minister who she had greeted, the first being Winston Churchill who greeted her on the tarmac off a plane from Kenya in 1952 when her father King George VI had passed away. She was just 25 years old.
